Why was she given up for adoption? Why did her adoptive parents reach out to Pennsylvania to find a child, though they lived in Oregon? Why did the man she knew as father wait 'til his deathbed to reveal a carved wooden box containing two locks of hair and a handmade quilt, that came to Oregon with her? Lexie grabs a chance to help a midwife in Pennsylvania who must not practice while awaiting a court ruling. On arrival she is met with rejection but Lexie won't take no for an answer. What transpires offers a glimpse into both Mennonite and Amish lives as Lexie learns the meaning of the Pennsylvania Dutch word demut, which means to let it be. She discovers the midwife Marta is her cousin. But no one is talking about any of the other families in the community, their connection to each other, and possibly to her. The Amish Midwife is a story with a sense of not being complete at its core. It tells of strong family ties. Of forgiving. And love. But also of jealousy and bitterness. Of infidelity and regrets.
