A
ndrew M. Greeley is not only the author of
Irish Tiger
and about a skillion other novels; he is a Catholic priest and sociologist as well as an Honorary Senior Fellow at the University of Ireland in Dublin.
F
ather Greeley has mastered the skills necessary to produce first class novels that seem to be simple stories, but which are very hard to put down. His characters are everyday people in what appear to be everyday situations.
T
hat's when he twists the story line to insert some suspense the reader never really sees coming. In
Irish Tiger
, we are introduced to John Patrick Donlan and Maria Angelica Connors. Both in their fifties and grandparents, they want to marry. John's late wife's family is dead set against this as are John's daughters. John and Maria come to Nuala Anne McGrail and her husband Dermot for guidance.
T
empers flare as nasty rumors slip into the local papers and frightening incidents occur. While fearing for their very lives, John and Maria still plan to marry. As always, a calmer head (Nuala's) prevails and the nuptials are performed. Everything is brought to a – no, I won't even give a hint as to the outcome. Read the delightful book and discover for yourself.
I
did find that, for me, the Irish idioms were a tad overdone. I've been fortunate enough to travel to Ireland many, many times and never heard many of them. And Dermot spent so much time romancing Nuala it's a wonder they got anything done other than make love. Even so, Father Greeley's books are always a treat.
