izzie Bea Carpenter is a single mom who works as a waitress at the local diner. Her sister Annie (a new mother) and her husband live close by but Annie has been acting oddly lately. Lizzie's best friends are girls who were her high school rivals when they were growing up - they are known as the
Enemy Club
by locals. She has been raising her fourteen year old daughter alone since her high school boyfriend, Ethan Pond, left. Now Ethan writes that he would love to see their daughter Paige on Christmas day. Lizzie is terrified she is going to lose Paige to her
fun
father, who travels the world.
T
ay Giovanni decides to sell everything he owns, and heads off to Galton to try to make amends for an accident. But the girl he tries to help wants nothing to do with him. She tells him she threw his money over a bridge. Not knowing what to do next, he decides to stay. Tay is sitting in the local diner when he overhears Lizzie jokingly say that she would like a man just for fixing up her home. After Tay shows up at her house offering to help, Lizzie is afraid he is a stalker. When she calls her cop brother-in-law to check Tay out, he tells her not to worry and let the guy fix things up.
T
ay starts to grow on Lizzie and they spend time together. Soon they know each other's secrets and seem to be helping each other through them. Tay is not sure he can stick around, though, after he finds the missing money. Can Tay and Lizzie work through their baggage or will they miss out on love?
How Sweet It Is
is the first in a series of books about the
Enemy Club
. Tay and Lizzie started out as such an odd couple that it was refreshing to watch them fall in love. Secondary characters brought humor and sensitivity to this small town story. I'll be on the lookout for the next in the series,
Sweet Kiss
.
