They risked death by joining underground Resistance efforts, working with Allied government agencies as spies and couriers, or they hid Jews and helped get them to safety. The engaging and suspense-filled stories of these brave teens and women from eight countries are told through the use of dialogue, direct quotes and document excerpts. Among these valiant women is Nancy Wake who rode nearly 300 miles on her bicycle in 72 hours to secure new radio and transmission codes to aid the French Resistance. Others include radio operator Noor Inayat Khan, Hannie Schaft who was involved in sabotage and weapons transfers, and Peral Witherington who served as a courier for the Special Operations Executive after parachuting into France. Plenty of photos and informative sidebars, along with a helpful glossary, make this eye-opening collection one that readers of either sex and any age will find fascinating.
