They met and fell in love, and settled into Sandy's apartment in the famous Dakota building on the Upper West Side of New York City. The apartment had been in the Portman family for years, and only the wealthy or famous live in the building. Sandy worked on Wall Street for an investment firm and Emily worked for a publishing house as an editor. She also found time to volunteer at the local animal shelter. After the accident Emily realized she did not know her husband at all; in fact he was a terrible husband. Sandy did not even know this about himself until he died. After his death, Sandy meets an older gentleman who makes a deal with him. He will get a second chance at life, but under the gentleman's terms. Sandy must help Emily get her life back on track, but it will be through the body of a little dog. As a man Sandy was a dog, so now things will be reversed. His spirit or soul is now in a little dog at the local shelter where Emily volunteers. Einstein is a scruffy, little stray that connects with Emily when she returns weeks later. Emily and Einstein is filled with heartache as Emily tries to start her life over without Sandy. She struggles with her emotions after learning that Sandy had many affairs after they were married. She cannot concentrate on her job, her relationship with her sister is rocky, and she falls into a deep depression. She deals with anger, thinking back on how Sandy treated her, and now her beloved apartment is going back to the Portman family. Shortly after adopting Einstein, she receives her eviction notice, but finds comfort feeling Sandy has never really left her. Sandy must work to right his wrongs to Emily, but when another man comes into her life he is not happy. Emily and Einstein is told in the alternating voices of Emily and Einstein (Sandy). The dog's thoughts and actions are superb. With Einstein's help, will Emily be able to run the marathon, keep her apartment, or even begin to forgive Sandy? The story has twists and touches of magic, making it a refreshing and delightful read.
