Billy is off to Los Angeles to help launch a new nighttime interview show featuring Irish comedian Desmond O'Day. For Billy, this is to be a short announcer's gig, just a week or so, and then he'll be back in his beloved NYC overseeing his restaurant and doing his own TV shows. Naturally, it is not going to be that simple. First, Billy discovers that an old enemy, a chef he once worked with, still has a bone to pick with him and their first encounter makes the evening news. Then, on the night the new show debuts, the program makes national headlines when the host is killed on stage in a bomb blast. The question is, was O'Day the intended victim or Billy? The police are convinced that the Irishman just happened to be in the wrong place at the wrong time, and arrest Billy's long time adversary. Case closed! Not quite. Although at first he agrees with the suspect's arrest, eventually Billy begins to wonder if the guilty party really is behind bars. Subsequent events, including two more murders, suggest perhaps there might have been a miscarriage of justice. Even though featuring the attention seeking antics and bad behavior of Hollywood personalities has become rather passé, the authors can't resist seasoning their mystery with these folks. But, given the nature of this romp that takes the reader from a ritzy beach enclave in Malibu to the Angeles National Forest in the San Gabriel Mountains, this scenario does work. If you are looking for a quick read, this book fits the bill nicely. It does sputter at the outset before the story finally takes hold and the ending is a bit farfetched but, that being said, The Midnight Show Murders is fairly satisfying as long as you don't expect too much. In that respect, it is somewhat akin to what Al Roker delivers on the Today show each morning!
