He lost his wife and young son when a drunk driver killed them five years before on his birthday. However, his pastor has asked him to include the driver's son. He knows that it is not the teenager's fault and finally agrees to include him in the program. Gabby Powers begs Wyatt to take her son Trevor into the program and is very grateful when he finally agrees. Trevor has taken to dressing like James Dean and is on the verge of being expelled from school. There are different aspects to the program, including group therapy and taking care of the horses. As much as Trevor does not want to admit it in the beginning, he begins to enjoy participating. Wyatt asks Gabby and Trevor to stay for dinner to get to know them a little more; and they become more interested in each other as time goes by. Wyatt's father Ram, who suffers a bit of dementia, also takes a shine to Trevor. Unfortunately, one of the horses is hurt when Ram takes him jumping, and Trevor has to deal with another loss in his life. If Wishes Were Horses is a poignant story of loss for two families. Trevor finds a way to deal with his through Ram and the horses. Gabby and Wyatt have to learn to heal from their losses before they can give in to their love to each other.
