When Hamish finds a man stuffed into a chimney at his home, of course he's aware there's foul play. The man was not well liked and will not be missed; but it seems a bit of an extreme way to remove him from the town of Drim. It's thought that the old-time chimney sweep is responsible. Hamish can't believe the quiet, affable man would murder someone. Then the sweep is himself found dead on the moors. The murdered householder owed a great deal of money and Hamish has his eye on four men who loaned him money for a scheme to make bundles more. Hamish pursues the men during the day and has dinner with several old girlfriends at night. As expected, Hamish has the usual contretemps with his nemesis Blair from the Strathbane police headquarters. Blair wants Hamish gone from the department but usually only blunders through a case. Hamish doesn't care who takes credit for solving cases (which Blair is prone to do); he doesn't want to be promoted and have to leave Lochdubh where he lives a quiet, easy life with his pets - a dog named Lugs and Sonsie the wildcat who comes to the rescue when needed. Death of a Chimney Sweep is another delightful book from M. C. Beaton and the twenty-seventh in the Hamish Macbeth series. I'm always happy when a new one is available. May they never stop.
