Finny lives with her parents and brother in the suburbs outside of Baltimore. Not happy with Delphine, the name her father gave her, she prefers to be called Finny. Her refusal to conform to her strict suburban family's rules began at an early age, but this novel begins when fourteen-year-old Finny meets Earl, the boy next door.

Finny doesn't mind that Earl is unusually short or that his father is a piano teacher whose musical career was cut short because he suffers from narcolepsy. However, she knows her family won't see things her way. After her brother sees Earl and Finny kissing in the woods between their homes, Finny is sent away to boarding school. This logical solution to Finny's rebellious nature suits her father and mother very well, but leaves her brother feeling guilty. He knows he will miss her. He agrees to take her letters to Earl while she is away.

Thorndale, Finny's new school, is situated in a beautiful setting just west of Boston. Although Finny misses Earl, she's happy at Thorndale. There she meets beautiful and sophisticated Judith, who becomes her best friend. Quick witted and funny, Finny makes this story enjoyable and memorable.
