Injured and without hope of imminent rescue, Nicole fears she'll freeze to death - until a stranger whisks her away to his remote mountain home. Nicole's saviour is churlish and secretive. At first she heeds his advice to rest and stay out of his affairs. But as the storm worsens and one day in Michael's home stretches to three, Nicole's curiosity, and growing attraction, gets the best of her. When she discovers the real reason why Michael has hidden himself from civilization, she's horrified and takes her chances with the storm once again. Michael is faced with a dilemma - should he let her die with his dark secrets intact, or rescue her a second time and reveal everything to Nicole, including his heart? Syrie James strips away all the heroic, sinister or sexual overtones associated with vampires and presents a simple and bittersweet story of a lonely man and a troubled woman who find themselves in an impossible situation. Michael despises what he is and how his immortality has robbed him of everything, just as Nicole asks herself why he is the only man who's ever understood her. Despite moments of stilted dialogue, Nocturne is a stylish and thoughtfully written story that presents two very real characters and a realistic approach to the question - what if a human woman and a vampire fall in love?
