Mob Rules, first of the Underworld Cycle is set in a part of LA, where dwell the lowest of undesirables, such as gamblers, hookers, and thugs. They feed the mob bosses unlimited sources of magic from the violence they generate. These mob bosses keep control of their territories, or at least try to.

Domino Riley is a gangster in an outfit under 6,000-year-old Shanar Rashan, a sorcerer of high regard. Domino was brought into the outfit as a teenager. She learned how to be disciplined and in control of her magic. Domino became second in command to Shanar, the youngest to achieve this to date. She has many responsibilities, being a gangster of high standing.

Something is happening in the city, starting with the murder of a low level mage. Domino uses her witch sight to discover that evil surrounds the death of Jamal, involving a ritual that hasn't been seen in ages. A second murder is cleaned up before she gets there. Domino wonders if it is related.

As the investigation proceeds, she begins to date the boss's son, Adan, who by the way is possessed, possibly by a demon. Magic is being squeezed out of the victims. An occult war might be in the air. Domino ends up going into the Between and meeting a magical creature called Honey, who helps her in strange ways. How will Domino resolve all this?

Mob Rules had a very slow beginning. I was thinking dud. But as I reached the middle of the story, I found myself caught up in the characters. Even though Domino is a street thug, you want to help her along in her journey. I enjoyed the book and am looking forward to the next in the series, which is a refreshing change in the paranormal arena.
