Chef Michel Richard started his award-winning career as a pastry chef. Along the way, he expanded his talents to include other aspects of the culinary world. However, he never lost his love of the pastry kitchen, and has now produced a gem of a pastry cookbook. Take my word for it. If you need to bake something for the church bake sale or your kid's scout group, or for a surprise for your family, this is the book where you will find what you are looking for, as well as other scrumptious recipes.

Sweet Magic has the most glorious desserts from which to choose. Don't look for luxurious photos. There are some, but most of the space in this lovely cookbook is used up by marvelous recipes that make the mouth water just to read of them. But I mustn't get ahead of myself. Before the recipes start, Chef Richard gives us his thoughts on baking and bits of his history. He has imbued these words with the love he has for his craft as well as the belief that we too can bake well.

Let's get to some of the recipes. How about Raspberry Tartlet with Strawberry Milk Custard? Or Rum Apple Crepes? The Crème Brulee Sandwich has me fascinated and in need of a bib. Extremely Chocolatly Chip Cookies? Chef Richard says his is the perfect pie crust. I always thought I had that one. But I shall try his and we'll see. I really don't think I stand a chance.

A bit of history or a memory attached to a certain pastry accompanies all the recipes, as well as extremely helpful tips. Sweet Magic is a perfect Christmas gift for the budding chef in your family. Or treat yourself to this one. You're worth it.
