Cat Coming Home by Shirley Rousseau Murphy is the sixteenth in her PI Joe Grey Mysteries. As always, it's another fine romp in Molena Point where Maudie Toola has returned to bring up her orphaned grandson.

Maudie's son and his new wife have been murdered and Maudie fears for the child's life as he might have seen who shot the bullets that killed his parents. But it's Christmas time and Maudie is determined to make the holiday as normal for the boy as possible.

Molena Point is home to English speaking cats owned by the town's residents. Cats who can articulate are rare but there are at least three in this town that are able to do so. Or is it maybe four? An old yellow tomcat has appeared on the scene and Joe Grey and his friends Dulcie and Kit are suspicious of him. Can he talk and why has he come?

Each of the feline's owners knows of this ability but has promised not to tell anyone else. The cats love to solve crimes and have developed a system of running over rooftops to keep an eye on the goings on of their friends.

Murder has been done along with home invasions of a particularly vicious nature. Targeting old women who live alone, the burglars terrorize and destroy. The cats remain vigilant and are soon cell phoning the local police with tips.

This is a fun series. With Christmas in the offing, Cat Coming Home is a perfect tale to get one in the mood - and enjoy a good mystery to boot.
