Even retellings of classics like Jane Eyre have gotten into the act and incorporated shuffling brain eaters into the familiar plotline. It's a phenomenon that doesn't look like it's going to turn to grave dust any time soon. As editor Lori Perkins explains in the engaging introduction to her creepy collection, Hungry For Your Love, 'the zombie mythos is the perfect metaphor for the end of an era, for a society beset with change it doesn't understand but knows is here'. Her collection of tales has something for everyone: if you prefer the familiar zombies who shuffle around mindlessly in search of human flesh then Isabel Roman's Zombified hits the mark. It tells the story of two strangers who inherit a plantation in modern day Martinique that does not specialize in sugar cane. First Love Never Dies, a spiffy police procedural by Jan Koslowski, follows a cop who tries to rescue his high school sweetheart from a heartless pimp. Julia Brainchild is a hilarious parody about two chefs determined to one up the other on their brain cooking TV show. Brian Keene, who, as a novelist has a reputation for creepy, gut-churning stories, offers the same in Captive Hearts, showing how a woman gets gruesome revenge against her scumbag lover. Those were my favourites in this macabre little collection of zombie romance. Halloween is just around the corner so why not pick up your own copy of Hungry For Your Love and find out which stories send a chill down your spine but also bring a tear to your eye - because gee whiz, even dead people deserve a little love.
