ady Anne Danvers has been betrothed since she was born to Rhys Carlisle, the Duke of Waverly. She is at a loss when he disappears after only a week of marriage. Anne is determined to find him and bring him home.

fter he and Anne returned from their honeymoon, Rhys's best friend disclosed a secret that shattered his memories of his childhood. He headed to a cottage where his mother brought him when he was a child. His father would never go and was angry that Rhys played with the village children, since his station in life was above theirs.
W
hen Anne finds out about the cottage, she joins him there. Rhys is furious that she came but agrees to let her stay. She comforts him but wants to know why he left her. It takes a while for him to share his secret and to explain why he feels that they can't remain married.

hys lets Anne know that his biological father was not who he was brought up to believe and that he is not really a Duke. Anne emphasizes that it does not matter to her and that she is in love with him. Rhys also loves Anne but does not want to ruin her life when people find out about his past.
