B
orn in Canada, Michael Hoffman moved to Japan in 1982 and lives in Hokkaido. The six short stories in this book are truly
little pieces
, giving a brief glimpse into the lives of modern-day Japanese.
W
hile the dialog is sprightly - Hoffman seems to get it just right - we have to content ourselves with bare-bones descriptions of people and places. In some stories, the plot does not seem to be very well developed. In others it is hard to understand the theme or point.
S
ince the subject matter is very interesting, we are left with a great appetite for more, perhaps in Hoffman's next work.
