True Justice    by Robert K. Tanenbaum Order:  USA  Can Pocket, 2001 (2000) Hardcover, Paperback, Audio Read an Excerpt      Reviewed by Wesley Williamson The story takes us along for the further adventures of Butch Karp, Chief ADA for NY County, his wife Marlene Ciampi, heavy handed defender of women's rights, and their daughter Lucy, who is a languages genius, rebellious teenager, and super devout Catholic all-in-one. Surprisingly, these books just keep getting better and better. This time, Butch has, reluctantly, to prosecute one of several cases of infanticide. At the same time, Marlene loses a client and decides to return to a less risky life as a lawyer. However her first case involves defending a girl charged with infanticide, and violence follows her. Lucy returns with a friend to her home only to find the friend's parents brutally murdered and her young brother traumatized. Although the three cases are completely separate, they are linked by certain moral dilemmas, and more directly when Lucy illegally interviews the alleged murderer of her friend's parents, and ends up in custody. For the first time Tanenbaum injects a hint of mysticism along with the mystery. Lucy certainly does not hear angelic voices, but she does feel impelled to carry out the interviews that get her into trouble. The complex relationships between Butch, Marlene and Lucy, and their interactions with other characters, such as a Jesuit priest, are well, believably and wittily handled. If you've read earlier Karp/Ciampi novels you'll enjoy True Justice even more. If you haven't, don't miss this excellent series.
