Wow! From the very first page until the last, the suspense generated by Patricia Gussin's And Then There Was One kept me either holding my breath or gasping for air.

Identical nine year-old triplets go to the movies. Only one comes home. Two have disappeared from the movie complex. Reports from movie goers say that a plump white woman walked away from the complex holding two little girls - who looked alike - by their hands.

Who could have taken them? Why? Where are they now? Alive or dead?

We then join the distraught parents in their anguish, as well as the third triplet who has her own little girl anguish, being separated from a big part of her life.

Security guard, local police, the FBI, and the media join in a force to bring the little girls home. We then are treated to the twisted thoughts of the kidnapper and feel a sort of sympathy for her.

The plot of this novel is deceptively simple but full of warnings to keep close watch on your own little ones. The feelings of the parents seem almost as if the author had suffered this ordeal herself. The pace is quick and the pages turn almost by themselves.

Scenes are set with just the right amount of detail to place readers in the middle of the action. We can almost hear the dog barking in the woods. Or avid journalists begging for a quote. Good book. Hard, hard, hard to put down.
