It is not like smog, we can't see it, and it doesn't smell like a natural gas leak or diesel exhaust, but according to Kerry Crofton, electro-pollution or the radiation caused by our cell phones and similar devices is just as dangerous to our wellbeing.

In his new book, Wireless Radiation Rescue – Safeguarding Your Family From the Risks of Electro-Pollution, Crofton defines the problem of electro-magnetic radiation (EMR) and offers a guide that will help reduce its levels in the home, offices and schools.

We don't have to give up all electronic devices, explains the author. But we do need to use them differently. First, we need to understand that the government standards we assume are protecting us are thousands of times too lenient, and there are biological effects from these safe levels – including: sleep disruption, dizziness, headaches, immune suppression, electro-sensitivity, unexplained cardiac symptoms, decreased fertility, and an increased risk for brain cancer and neurological disorders.

Divided into four sections, the book opens with Know the Evidence and Know Your Risks, which address the debate concerning the safety of cell phones and include a discussion of the biological effects and evidence of damage associated with EMR.

Research indicates that pregnant women, babies, children, and young adults are most at risk and experts are especially concerned about individuals who spend an inordinate amount of their time immersed in technology.

The next two sections, Safer Solutions and Your Action Plan, offer suggestions on how to deal with EMR and find better (and safer) ways of using wireless equipment.

The reader will want to take a close look at a questionnaire the author provides that will help identify risks such as PDAs and mobile phones (cell and cordless), video games, baby monitors, hybrid cars, and more.

You'll also want to read carefully the recommendations for a safer way to use cell phones, laptops, computer screens, baby monitors, cordless phones, microwave ovens, video games and other devices of this nature.

The book also features an extensive resource section with information on organizations including research, advocacy and elctro-sensitivity support groups, medical clinics/professional practices, and reference material.

The debate on EMR is ongoing. Confusing the issue is the discrepancy of the research findings. Dr. Henry Lai, a biologist at the University of Washington, found that only 25% of studies funded by the wireless industry show some type of biological effect from microwave radiation. On the other hand, in independently funded studies (free of industry influence), 75% of the studies show adverse biological effects.

Obviously, you'll have to decide for yourself how serious the problem is or even if there is one. That being said, at least this book offers some options for those who have concerns about the negative effects of EMR.
