In this latest Hiaasen novel, Skink is, as usual, hiding out in the swamps, using his wit and brawn to bring shady land investors to vigilante justice. Long ago, the former Florida governor gave up hope that the government would ever pursue the reprobates.

Ann DeLusia, an out-of-work actress, has a gig as stand in for Cherry Pye, a teen pop star with drug problems. Ann shows up whenever she's needed and leads the paparazzi away from the real Cherry Pye whenever she's in crisis. Not even Cherry is aware she has a double.

Ann meets Skink when she gets time off while Cherry goes into drug rehab. He rescues her from a single car accident and she helps him highjack a bus load of land developers. Skink likes the girl and gives her his number to call if she's ever in need.

Soon after, Ann is kidnapped by Bang Abbott, an unusually persistent paparazzo, who wants to do legitimate photos of Cherry Pye to make her immortal like Marilyn Monroe. When he finds out he has her double, he offers to trade Ann for Cherry. Ann knows that isn't going to happen, but she becomes really worried when Cherry's handlers don't even report her missing.

Get ready for a dose of thoughtful realism amid wacky satire that skewers celebrity culture and Florida's environmental recklessness, in Star Island.
