In 101 Ways to Save Money on Health Care: Tips to Help You Spend Smart and Stay Healthy, Dr. Cynthia Koelker shares a wealth of information from a doctor's perspective on how to save on health expenses, from medication to long-term care and everything in between.

Although she admits that she doesn't have all the answers for high-ticket items like a heart bypass or bone marrow transplant, Dr. Koelker does have plenty of tips for saving money on doctor visits, prescription medications, preventive health care, and chronic disease.

'You'll learn how to limit your out-of-pocket expenses for acute illness, medical testing, hospital bills, and ancillary health services,' writes the author. 'Unless you never need a doctor, you will save money using this consumer guide.'

The book is arranged into ten chapters. The opening sections address ways of saving money on doctor visits, prescription medications, preventive health care, chronic health problems, and acute illness. The last five chapters focus on money saving tips on medical testing, hospital expenses, ancillary services, over-the-counter treatments, and over-the-counter drugs that were once prescriptions.

A sampling of the acute illness section shows tips on how to deal with athlete's foot and other foot fungi, broken toes and painful pinkies, laryngitis and pharyngitis, metal allergy (infected earrings), sprained ankles, and a range of other maladies.

In clear, straightforward language, Dr. Koehler shares the knowledge she has acquired on how to save money at the doctor's office and still get excellent care. She also provides a list of useful patient-oriented Internet resources, pharmaceutical sites with offers for over the counter medications, and pharmacies with generics for about $4 a month.

The best way to save money on medical expenses is to stay healthy in the first place, but when problems do arise, you'll be happy to have this book at your fingertips. It will give you peace of mind and save a few bucks as well!
