W
endy Hornsby, do not stop writing. Ever! I just finished the last page of
The Paramour's Daughter
. The only thing I didn't like was that it ended.
T
his new work of Hornsby's starts off like a tired old plot that many other authors have used. Some distant relative dies and leaves the protagonist an inheritance. Ho hum! Nothing new here. But wait!
A
heretofore unknown mother appears on the scene, which leads to a trip to France. And a whole new family. Big family. And its members not really getting along with each other. Which could have disastrous consequences. Not could. Does!
A
s more pages are read, the plot thickens and suspense builds - revolving around family relationships and the monies garnered from a patent.
T
he characters are so lifelike that should they appear on your doorstep, you would invite them in for a cup of tea. Some you might not invite back. Others you'd welcome with open arms. Whichever, they all seem real and well fleshed out.
T
here are many characters and it is easy to mix them up. However, there is a list of the cast of players at the beginning of the book that allows the relationships to fall into place. The dénouement is not a total surprise. I worked it out before the last few pages, feeling at one with the author.
T
he Paramour's Daughter
is a great read with some wonderful vignettes of France thrown in for good measure.
