My first ever experience with anything Warcraft was reading the original English language manga Warcraft: The Sunwell Trilogy: Dragon Hunt by Richard A. Knaak and Jae-Hwan Kim. World of Warcraft: Shadow Wing, by the same writer and artist, is the sequel series, starting with The Dragons of Outland.

Paladin Jorad Mac is back with the rest of the knights, trying to prove himself worthy after befriending the Blue Dragon Tyrygosa, or Tyri. In an attempt to clear his name, Jorad, with the help of Tyri, sets out on a quest, only to be sucked into Outland, a desolate world full of orcs and nether dragons. It is also a world at war, and Jorad and Tyri must quickly choose their alliances.

Once again, we are treated to Kim's gorgeous, highly-detailed art which is what makes the World of Warcraft manga stand out. The story in Shadow Wing, though, is darker than in The Sunwell Trilogy, leading to even more expertly-rendered action sequences. The one problem is that when there is no fighting, there is a little too much exposition and narration for a graphic novel.

While I still prefer The Sunwell Trilogy, Shadow Wing is another great foray into the World of Warcraft universe. Richard A. Knaak and Jae-Hwan Kim make an excellent manga team.
