ophie Jones lives in Gig Harbor, Washington. Just turning twenty-nine, she is content with her life. She owns and operates a chocolate shop, and every day creates new and tasty treats for her customers. Sophie has had her share of tragedy in her life. When she was just nine years old, she was in a car crash that killed her parents, grandmother, and a few other people. She was raised in different foster homes until she went to live with Ellen, the police officer on duty the night of the crash. Now Ellen is an important part of Sophie's life.
S
ophie was engaged to be married to Garrett Black, a young doctor. When he walked away from Sophie she became depressed and cynical. Now she feels something will eventually take your happiness. She started making batches of cookies, dipped in bitter chocolate, with a handwritten message inside each one. They weren't happy messages, for example '
if you thought things were looking up, you were upside down.
' But they became a big hit with her customers. With her close friends and her business, Sophie took each day as it came.
N
ow, a year later, Garrett has returned to Gig Harbor, and wants to start over with Sophie. She is not interested in his reason for leaving and rejects his advances, but Garrett will not be easily ignored. He cannot believe how bitter Sophie has become in her attitude and comes up with a scheme to place an ad in the local paper, '
wanted, happiness.
' Sophie agrees with Garrett, that if they receive one hundred replies, she will go out on a date with him. The ad leads them down a path they never expected.
