here is no denying that Elia Kazan was one of the topmost directors of stage and screen in the mid-20th century. Seeing his notes on his works helps to explain why he was so good at what he did.

lets us do just that.

eep in mind while reading this, though, that these were his notes to himself, or the cast, or even the playwright. Because of this, the reader gets to see the true Kazan, good and bad, in a way that could never be explored in other formats, even if he had written a book on directing himself. This book will not teach you about directing or even why Kazan became a director, but through these first-hand accounts, you will see how he was so good at what he did.

is not an easy, light read, and some sections are so personal that they would be completely lost on the reader if editor Robert Cornfield did not interject here and there. However, this is a useful read for anyone in the profession to learn vicariously through a master.
