When the lively action begins, Reverend Thomas Brothers, a religious charlatan keen on human sacrifice, has caused considerable problems for Holmes and Russell. In response to their deadly experiences with Brothers, experiences which led to the death of Sherlock Holmes's daughter-in-law, Holmes and his wounded son, the grieving Damian, are on the run from both Brothers and Scotland Yard, and quickly fled from northern Scotland, heading for the European coast; Mary Russell, with Holmes's three-and-a-half year old granddaughter in tow, is also on the run, and has found temporary sanctuary with a peculiar recluse in a seemingly enchanted forest setting in England's Lake District; and Holmes's brother, the singular Mycroft, has been imprisoned in London under extraordinarily suspicious circumstances. What follows is Holmes's and Russell's gradual discovery that Brothers is merely a pawn in a sinister game with murderous stakes, and - if Holmes and Russell do not prevail against this formidable adversary - Holmes's entire family may be (for lack of a better word) sacrificed. The bottom line is this: Laurie King proves once again that she is a competent successor to Arthur Conan Doyle, the creator of the Sherlock Holmes stories. Dedicated fans of the brilliant Baker Street sleuth (and his equally talented wife, Mary Russell) will not be disappointed in the highly recommended first-class entertainment, The God of the Hive.
