P
asadena Homicide Detective Nan Vining - who starred in the trilogy comprised of
The First Cut
,
Cut to the Quick
, and
The Deepest Cut
, returns for an encore in
Love Kills
. She is still partnered with her lover, Jim Kissick, though their romantic relationship (which they are keeping to themselves) is threatening to become a problem on the job.
T
he story opens on several murders. First the reader sees a celebrity private eye (who was dating Nan's mother Patsy) set up for the knifing of a young woman, Trendi, and then killed himself. The next corpse to be found is that of Tink Engleford, a socialite who had trouble dealing with the deaths of her son and husband and who was a close friend of Patsy's. The deaths are all linked to celebrity self-help guru Georgia Berryhill (who has made a fortune helping people understand their
shadow selves
) - and to the young women in crisis she helps,
Georgia's Girls
.
A
s Nan and Jim dig through the evidence, there are further related killings ... and a celebrity birth. Along the way, Nan finds information about her father's identity, something that Patsy had always refused to divulge to her. She and Jim receive help from a surprising source before the villains are apprehended. And Nan is reassured about '
the enduring power of family and friends, especially girlfriends.
