F
our-panel strips are basically the Japanese equivalent of North American comic strips. As these short strips are meant to be comedic, they can sometimes get lost in translation, especially between vastly different cultures.
T
his is the main problem with
.hack//4koma
, which is mainly comprised of 4-panel strips by Koichi Sumimaru. The other problem is that, even if the humor does translate to a Western audience, you must be a
.hack
fan to get the joke.
W
hile I have read quite a few of the various
.hack
manga (but have not played or watched any of the videogames or anime), I still felt like an outsider reading an inside joke. The short story,
Peaco's Story
by Sumimaru, and the longer (2-page) comics by other authors were a little more engrossing, but still are geared to
.hack
fanatics.
