This is their bonding time and Mom's alone time. This Saturday ends in tragedy and Lacey can't help but blame herself. If she hadn't taken so long to dress that morning, the accident wouldn't have happened. She wouldn't have lost her dad and her family wouldn't be changed forever. Ten months later, Lacey still cringes when friends or new acquaintances try to express their sympathy. When she meets Sam, she's sure his 'I know how you feel,' is just another platitude. At home, each family member has his or her own way of dealing with her dad's death, some more destructive than others. Lacey's family is disintegrating and she doesn't know how to fix things. At school Lacey meets Kelsi Hamilton whose mother recently died from cancer. She watches her fellow students react to Kelsi's situation and decides that helping others to cope with their loss might be better than trying to go it alone. Lacey's grief doesn't go away when she befriends Kelsi, but she learns that everyone expresses their grief differently.
