Daria Camfield has spent several years in the jungles of South America as a missionary when the unthinkable happens: her husband Nathan, on an excursion to another village, is killed. Heartsick and newly pregnant, Daria returns to Kansas, where her family is and where she must endure the strains of continuing her life as a widow and single mother. It's not surprising that when she decides to pursue a new relationship, her in-laws are less than thrilled and her heart is heavily confused. Little does Daria know that this is only the beginning of the emotional turmoil to come in her young life.

While this sweet romance novel was certainly intriguing and a good read, I was prejudiced against it all the way through. Why? The back cover gave away 80% of the story. That's not how I want to read a book! I felt that Deborah Raney set up the storyline as a mystery - but the whole mystery was given away before I had turned the first page. Thus, I suggest if you decide to read this book, don't read the Amazon blurb. Don't read the back cover. Just glance at the lovely, sunny front cover and read! (Also, I don't think Kansas is the South, but that's my own personal issue I suppose!)

That said, the story really is intelligent. Beneath a Southern Sky draws the reader in and will keep you reading well into the hours of the morning.
