Moira O'Donnell is a powerful witch whose quest to hunt down her fanatical mother Fiona has taken on even darker dimensions. Fiona is addicted to black magic and has a diabolical plan to find the Book of Knowledge and subsequently let loose the Seven Deadly Sins upon an unsuspecting planet, thereby securing her own immortality.

Moira is joined in her quest by Rafe Cooper, the haunted ex-priest who feels responsible for the demons' release; mistrustful demonologist Anthony Zaccardi; a tough female sheriff; a crime writer who's after the story of a lifetime; and a pair of teenagers equally determined to save the world - and their blooming love.

Brennan is best known for her romantic suspense trilogies and since her debut in 2005 has turned in an impressive list of over a dozen titles. Due to the continuing popularity of all things supernatural, she has joined a growing league of brand name thriller and suspense authors who have given their plots more of a paranormal twist.

Unfortunately, Original Sin is anything but original - Brennan's premise was initially introduced in Deliver Us From Evil a lacklustre and derivative story that was part of a 2007 paranormal anthology (What You Can't See). In expanding her tale, Brennan creates a confusing and bloated beginning and a host of cardboard characters with erratic motivations. The story's suspense does pick up about halfway through but not enough to captivate readers who enjoy paranormals with meatier plot lines and sympathetic, three dimensional characterizations.
