Comedian Zane Lamprey, host of the Fine Living Network show Three Sheets, gives readers good travel advice in his How to Use This Book intro: 'Spend a hundred dollars on a bus tour and you'll see the land and learn about its history. Spend a hundred in a pub buying a few rounds and you'll learn about the people who made the land and who live the history.'

In Three Sheets: Drinking Made Easy! 6 Continents, 15 Countries, 190 Drinks, and 1 Mean Hangover!, Lamprey takes readers on a global pub crawl, imbibing and clowning his way through northern Europe, the Caribbean and South America, as well as Japan, New Zealand, and Las Vegas. He advises that 'When you're done with this book you should be able to confidently discuss the difference between whisky and whiskey, tequila and mescal, and champagne and sparkling wines. You'll know the difference between ales and lagers. And you will have the ability to intelligently order from the sake menu in a Japanese restaurant based on more than just the prices.'

Lamprey begins his worldwide booze-up in Ireland, whose capital, Dublin, 'has one thousand registered pubs.' He introduces each region with latitude and longitude, name, language(s), how to say cheers (Sláinte! in this case), a rough map, and the local hangover remedy (along with his own rating of it, based on painful experience). He includes all kinds of intriguing information, like the fact that 'if calculated by ounce, a Guinness is significantly lower in calories than a Budweiser' - who could have guessed?

From Ireland (my birthplace) we move on to Champagne, France for my favorite drink - though I have no plans to try opening a bottle of bubbly with a saber as described in this section! Next comes Scotland for whisky and haggis; Belgium for beer lovers; Poland for vodka and a Moscow Mule; Tequila, Mexico for tequila and mescal; Argentina for wine and barbecue; Jamaica for rum and Red Stripe; St. Martin/St. Maarten for guavaberry liqueur; Las Vegas for odd concoctions like a bacon martini; Taipei for kaoliang mixed with snake excretions (yecch!); New Zealand for the top hangover remedy (not portable unfortunately); Japan for sake; Tanzania for mbege and konyagi; and South Africa for Goats Do Roam wines.

Reading Three Sheets may not be the next best thing to being there, but it's certainly the next best thing to drinking alongside Zane Lamprey - and it avoids the hangovers! Santé!
