When cartoonist Marisa Acocella Marchetto discovered she had breast cancer, she wrote about it the best way she knew how – in comics. Cancer Vixen is the whole graphic novel experience, from her diagnosis to the end of her radiation.

While Marchetto's serious journey covers not only her battle with cancer but also her changing attitude to the world around her, the graphic format helps to liven it up a bit. My personal favorites were the gossips pictured as sour grapes on a vine. However, seeing the needles that look drawn to scale, made those parts of cancer treatment even scarier (at least for me and my needle-phobia).

Most of all, though, I appreciated how honest Marchetto's take was on the whole experience, which makes Cancer Vixen a wonderful illustrated memoir.
