I have read a great many of Carolyn Hart's mysteries and enjoyed each and every one. On opening the first page of Merry, Merry Ghost (second in her series featuring Bailey Ruth), I was unprepared for a ghost story and not too sure I would like it. I had missed the first in this Bailey Ruth series, Ghost at Work, and so had no prior knowledge of this very happy, fun-loving, extremely helpful ghost, who at times is a bit recalcitrant.

I'm so glad I met Bailey Ruth. She is my kind of gal - true to her convictions with a heart of gold. Also 'faster than a speeding bullet and able to leap tall buildings at a single bound'. What fun. Wearing lovely clothes when she chooses to materialize. And eats from any refrigerator that catches her fancy. I sort of envy her.

Anyway, Bailey Ruth is sent to earth by Wiggins from Heaven's Department of Good Intentions on what she calls an adven-mission. A four year-old boy is left on his grandmother's front porch just before Christmas. Not knowing she had a grandchild until that moment, the woman had written a will leaving her money to her husband's relatives. Now, her heart changes and she leaves the bulk of her fortune to the child. Need I say that the previous heirs are not happy at this turn of events and mutter among themselves? When the woman, who had been on her last legs, dies before the new will can be signed, the hangers-on breath a sigh of relief.

Bailey Ruth to the rescue. I'll reveal no more of the plot which is fun, intriguing and downright clever. Read for yourself the outcome of Bailey Ruth's adven-mission. It's a great Christmas story.
