David Small's memoir, Stitches, takes a unique look at growing up with a cancerous growth. When David was eleven, a growth was discovered on his neck. Three years later, it was removed, along with half of his vocal chords. His stoical parents kept from him the cause of the growth – cancer.

As David grows up, he learns the truth about himself and his family. As his story shows, David Small has always had an active imagination, so the graphic novel format suits his life history well. It also helps to add a bit of quirky humor to what otherwise would be a somber tale.

Small's art effortlessly captures emotions that run the gamut, ensuring Stitches will stay with the reader long after the book is put down.
