Never in a million years did Gabby Fairbanks think that she, along with her mother and dog, would be living in a homeless shelter. Yet after Gabby's husband Philip kicks them out of their penthouse, the three find themselves at Manna House - a homeless shelter for women. Gabby's job as Manna House's Activities Director was a source of contention between Gabby and Philip.

Gabby's main focus is on her sons, P.J. and Paul, who were taken (by Philip) to stay with their grandparents in Virginia. Mabel Turner, the director of Manna House, helps Gabby connect with a lawyer at Legal Aid to help her regain custody of the boys. Of course, this means finding a residence that is not Manna House, which takes money.

In addition to her crumbling marriage, Gabby is trying to care for her mother, who has been having headaches and acting strangely. Gabby finds herself surrounded by people who want to help her rebuild her life, including a bag lady named Lucy and the Yada Yada Prayer Group. Gabby will learn that 'when the enemy throws something at you ... it's praise that changes the battle lines.'

This is the second installment in the House of Hope series, a spin-off of Jackson's popular Yada Yada Prayer Group series. The strong, realistic characters and faith are integral elements and reading this new series feels comfortably familiar. Jackson reminds the reader that God works in unexpected ways and that His plans are greater than we can ever envision. We need to remember who we are in Christ and that, no matter the circumstances, He is the rock we can stand on.
