As the subtitle indicates, William Stillman's goal is to celebrate and defend children with autism. 'I endeavor to educate others from an inside-out perspective,' writes the author. 'That is, from the perspective of the individual with a different way of being in order to gain a much-needed and usually overlooked insight.' In debunking some of the commonly held misperceptions of autism, Stillman stresses that those with autism are intelligent, insightful and inspired individuals who can participate and contribute to society in many different ways. He also takes to task high cost therapies and medications that promote a culture of fear about autism. Explaining his goal, Stillman says he wants to help parents 'navigate interactions with autism and medical professionals, educators, and the community at large in a manner that will inspire you to serve as your child's voice until he is in a position to advocate for himself'.
