Eve isn't crazy about following through - she's still determined to escape her unwanted Fate - but she realises that the more she knows the more she can hold over her Handlers' celestial heads. The fact that she's still head-over-heels in love with Alec Cain (and he with her) complicates her situation a thousand fold, since Jehovah and his cadre of scary, omnipotent archangels are manipulating his life as much as hers. Sequestered at an abandoned military base with a handful of other recruits, and overseen by Raguel, the vengeance archangel, Eve discovers that all is not as it seems. One by one, her classmates are slaughtered in the most horrible of ways. It's soon clear that there is a traitor amongst them, one who is likely working for the other guy who holds dominion in Hell. The situation gets even stickier when a bunch of paranormal researchers roll in to film segments for their show. With Cain off tracking a rogue werewolf and Abel trying to get a handle on a new demonic threat, it's up to Eve to figure out who's slaughtering her fellow Marks - before she becomes the killer's next victim. While this plotline is at times disjointed and slow moving as well as character heavy, Day still spins a gripping and unique urban fantasy. Eve is faced with various new conflicts. Personally, she finds her affection torn between an increasingly distant Alex and a suddenly overly attentive Reed. Professionally she's buying into her new role as a Mark while still very determined to eventually shake herself free, even if it means giving up the love of her life. Eve of Destruction is an entertaining second instalment to a series that scores high on the inventive and enjoyment factors.
