A
bigail Campano returns home to her trendy uptown Atlanta neighborhood to find her daughter murdered and the apparent killer standing over her body with a knife in his hand. She loses control and with energy born from despair she strangles the young man to death.
W
ill Trent, a special agent for the Georgia Bureau of Investigations, arrives on the scene before the bodies are removed. He determines that the brutalized body of a teenage girl is not Emma but her friend, and that the young stranger Abigail Campano strangled is not the murderer.
W
ill struggles to find Emma Campano before the killer realizes that he is safer with Emma dead. Detective Faith Mitchell from the Atlanta Police Department partners with Will. Faith is good police officer but not the partner Will would have chosen. His investigation into Atlanta police corruption forced her mother's retirement.
P
rotagonist Will Trent is one of the most unusual heroes in a mystery series. Scared both physically and mentally from abuse as a child, Will doesn't look like a cop and doesn't act like a cop, but his closure rate is phenomenal. Only his boss, Amanda Wagner, understands how hard he works to make that happen.
T
his is the second book in the Will Trent series. Slaughter's mysteries are always exciting, but the sympathetic characters she creates are what drives her stories.
