Protagonist Will Trent is one of the most unusual heroes in a mystery series. Scared both physically and mentally from abuse as a child, Will doesn't look like a cop and doesn't act like a cop, but his closure rate is phenomenal. Only his boss, Amanda Wagner, understands how hard he works to make that happen. This is the second book in the Will Trent series. Slaughter's mysteries are always exciting, but the sympathetic characters she creates are what drives her stories.
