Prism    by Faye Kellerman & Aliza Kellerman Order:  USA  Can HarperCollins, 2009 (2009) Hardcover, CD, e-Book Read an Excerpt     Reviewed by Hilary Williamson In Prism, written by bestselling author Faye Kellerman with her daughter Aliza, an accident on a high school field trip sends three teens through a prism to an alternate universe, with a draconian approach to the view that 'You don't screw around with nature' - any medical treatment is illegal. Once they figure out they're not in Kansas any more, the trio desperately seek a way home. Kaida Hutchenson is unhappy when she learns that she is to share the long journey to Carlsbad Caverns with two fellow students she normally avoids, annoyingly perfect overachiever Zeke Anderson and smart (aside from her chain smoking habit) and rather sad Joy Tallon. They're the only ones in the van, which is driven by one of Kaida's favorite teachers, Mr. Addison. After dozing off on the journey, the trio awaken to a crash - they escape the van just before it turns into a fiery inferno. Joy's arm is injured and they fear that their teacher died in the accident. Caught in a torrential downpour, the three seek refuge in a cave, which is where they stumble into another world. The three awaken to what seem at first their normal lives - some time before the planned field trip. But they soon realize that they're in a world where any serious injury or disease is untreated and is often a death sentence - and Joy's arm is pretty bad. The only good thing in Kaida's new situation is that she meets Ozzy (a new transfer student) at school, and their attraction is mutual. After Kaida learns that her new friend (whose mother is seriously ill) is a drug dealer, they ally in an attempt to find a treatment for Joy, a way home for Kaida and her friends, and hope for Ozzy's world. Prism takes an interesting premise and develops it into an exciting story, whose ending hints at more. I look forward to it.
