ack Foley, America's foremost bank robber, meets millionaire hustler Cundo Rey in prison. Seems like their chosen fields of endeavor didn't pan out too well. At any rate, they both leave jail at about the same time with plans to meet again at Rey's house in Florida. There Condo's wife, professional psychic Dawn Navarro, has been waiting for him for seven years.
O
ne thing leads to another. Trust is not a long suite in the relationships that develop. Each character feels they must watch their own backs while also watching the gun hands of the others. The plot quickly thickens, as do all of Elmore Leonard's plots. Leonard is a seasoned author who provides his readers with a good read each and every time. His characters are well fleshed out. They may not be anyone you would want to know, but he gives each a touch of reality that brings a cohesive force to his story.
S
urprises abound and tension builds as the three and their minions interact. Even though Foley is a well-practiced bank robber, you can't help liking him. His philosophy tends to produce a laid-back individual and a man who thinks his way through life - which could prove to be life-saving for him.
T
he New York Times says that '
When you read Elmore Leonard, you enter Mr. Leonard's world. A trip like that is its own kind of vacation.
' I totally agree.
Road Dogs
is a fun book with a kicker at the end.
