hen her parents skip town to avoid her dad's prosecution for embezzlement, eighteen-year-old Carlotta Wren was left to raise her nine-year-old brother Wesley.

ow he's nineteen, jobless and addicted to gambling. He's just been arrested for hacking into the city's computers and Carlotta has to find the money for both his loan sharks and his bond. Carlotta's salary as a salesclerk at Atlanta's Neiman Marcus barely pays for necessities.

hen her parents went on the run Carlotta's wealthy friends avoided her and her fiancé Peter Ashford dumped her. Now her ex-friend Angela (who is married to Pete) is Carlotta's best customer at Neiman Marcus. Much of her salary comes from commissions on sales to Angela. Despite Angela's catty needling, Carlotta perseveres and manages to remain professional.

hen Angela is murdered, Peter becomes the prime suspect. Despite how he treated her in the past, Carlotta doesn't believe he killed Angela, but every lead she follows makes him look more guilty. Soon she too becomes a suspect when the police discover he still carries her photograph in his wallet.
