They decide to make the trip at night, which puts them on a deserted east Texas highway. Then Maggie slams her jeep into an already dead cow causing major damage to her jeep. Zeke, a good-looking young cattle rancher, gives them a ride to the nearest town. His family's ranch covers almost the entire county. Since the required jeep parts have to be ordered, Maggie and Lisa are forced to spent a few days in Dulcina, Texas. The dead cow Maggie hit is just one in a series of animals who have died under suspicious circumstances. Many locals believe their deaths are the fault of El Chupacabra, a creature who lives on the blood of his prey. Zeke insists that El Chupy is a myth and that whatever is killing the animals is a natural, wild predator. Maggie and Lisa investigate and soon realize that El Chupy is a demon. The danger escalates and animals aren't the only ones getting hurt. Since Zeke doesn't believe in El Chupy, he's unlikely to believe in a demon. Maggie and her friend Lisa play well off one another. Maggie's sarcastic wit and Lisa's evil genius combine to make Highway to Hell as fun and entertaining as the first two books of the series.
