The Grey family lives in the small town of Oyster Shores, Washington. Their ranch overlooks the Pacific Ocean and they have a beautiful view of the Olympic Mountains. When their mother dies of cancer, the Grey sisters (Winona, Aurora, and Vivi Ann) are overcome with grief and loss. Their father becomes withdrawn and they are left to raise themselves.

Winona, being the eldest, takes over the role of caregiver and does her best to raise herself and her sisters. She is always striving for her father's approval but he only has praise for the youngest, Vivi Ann. She is the one who most resembles their mother and she loves the horses and the family ranch. Winona resents this, but tries to hide her feelings. Aurora, being the middle child, always wants everyone to be happy and get along, so she takes on the role of peacemaker.

Years later Winona has become a successful lawyer but has never found love. She is in love with her childhood friend Luke, but he sees Winona only as a good friend. Aurora has married a doctor and has two young children. She is keeping a secret from her sisters that she does not want to reveal. Vivi Ann has stayed on at the ranch with her father, helping with the horses and managing the business. When Luke asks Vivi Ann out on a date, Winona is overcome with a jealousy that tears the sisters apart. This perceived betrayal by Vivi Ann results in years of misunderstandings and rejections.

When a new ranch hand is hired, Vivi Ann shocks the family and Oyster Shores by marrying him. This union splits Vivi Ann from her father and her sisters. Then a crime has the town reeling in fear, and trouble lands on the Grey doorstep. Instead of rallying them together, this tragedy pits sister against sister, and father against daughters. It will take years for justice and the truth to be known, and the Grey family struggles to ride out the storm.

True Colors is a beautifully written story about the bond between sisters. Their love is tested by sibling rivalry, jealousies, and forgiveness.
