But he is also an accomplished author who writes with humor and wisdom. Have You Seen ...? is an anthology of 1000 films that he felt were worthy of 500 word mini essays. Much information is packed into the summaries that provide great insight rather than a simple review of the film. There is not a ten best as the focus is more on the cultural impact of each movie and the sometimes fleeting purpose of the director. The book covers a chronology from 1985 to 2007 and is in alphabetic sequence. Search for your favourite film and either agree or disagree with the author, but a fresh viewpoint is assured. The book or the film summaries are very readable, completed with great literary skill and a personal versus an academic perspective. David Thomson writes about a subject he loves. Think about the dedication and hours required to watch 1000 movies, probably often more than once. This is a must book for the serious movie watcher; the intelligent and probing analysis will provide many hours of enjoyment away from the big screen.
