Shane Scully is an LAPD detective accused of tampering with evidence and having an affair with a movie star's wife. He is allowed to quietly resign from the police department; however, his wife's reaction is a little more vocal. Everyone at the courthouse hears her tell him to move out of their home.

There is more here than hits the eye. But I won't tell you what. Find out for yourself. I had it pegged from the first few pages, but that didn't diminish my enjoyment of the book. It's a corker with loads of fast action, twists and turns. That action takes place in Haven Park, a very corrupt little city near Los Angeles. This is the only police force that will hire Scully. The news of his disgrace traveled quickly and he was blackballed from any decent force.

The police corruption doesn't stop at the station house. The mayor is adding to his coffers also. Between them, the police and mayor have the city sewed up and are draining it dry. Haven Park's population is mostly derived from illegal aliens, the majority from Mexico, smuggled across the border by the infamous coyotes. Haven Park's police and mayor dig deep into the almost empty pockets of the aliens, and who do the aliens have to complain to? Bad situation.

On the Grind moves quickly and surely through the muddle. It's a compelling story that makes one a little uneasy – could some of this be taken from true life? Author Stephen Cannell has many books under his belt and this one is another sure fire hit. Don't miss it.
