In the novel Death in Daytime, she uses her own background in a new series featuring Alexis Peterson, a daytime soap star soon to be written out of the storyline of The Yearning Tide. When she finds the head writer murdered in her own dressing room, Alexis is sorry for the death of a human being, but heaves a sigh of relief that she will not now be written out of the script. Until, that is, she is suspected of being the murderer. Determined to clear her name, she investigates on her own. Not such a good idea as she is hit on the head and rigged to look as though she were attempting suicide. Surviving that, she finds another dead body and is again suspected. The plot of Death in Daytime moves quickly as Alexis tries to manage her life and that of her small daughter, and also keep a loving eye on her mother, as she fights to prove her innocence. Alexis is down to earth and has no illusions about her role in the soap. It's a job. A good one she wants to keep. The behind the scenes depiction proves interesting, more or less proving that actors are no less than human and have the same needs and problems that the rest of us on the other side of the screen have. Death in Daytime opens a charming new series that will keep me looking for more, if only to see which man Alexis favors – the police detective or the forensic scientist.
