Mackinnon, Paul Shoebridge, & Michael Simons) is a graphic (both literally and figuratively) look at injustice in four very different parts of the world. The author, actress Mia Kirshner, traveled the world, collecting first hand accounts of major humanitarian crises. She visited displaced persons from war-torn Chechnya, collected stories from sex workers in ethnically-cleansed Burma, investigated the deaths of girls in Juarez, Mexico, and watched helplessly as the wasting sickness destroyed lives in Malawi. Her notes and first-hand accounts from those she interviewed are complied in scrapbook form, with pictures and drawings, helping to bring the images home. Some of these pictures are difficult to look at, especially the ones from Burma – but others give a feeling of hope. Kirshner - with the help of J. B. Mackinnon, Paul Shoebridge, and Michael Simons - does an exceptional job putting a human face to devastating problems to which people of developed nations have become desensitized. I Live Here is both heartwrenching and beautiful, inspiring readers (without ever preaching) to reach out to those in need.
