A
uthor Rita Mae Brown's cat, Sneaky Pie Brown, would like to take credit for writing cozies. In reality, she works in collaboration with Rita Mae. Together they produce fun mysteries that also keep their readers up on the latest happenings in Crozet, Virginia.
S
neaky's responsibilities toward the finished novel are to speak for the animals that live with and around Harry Haristeen, who has just remarried her ex-husband Fair. Harry and Fair (he's a veterinarian) are caught up in the horse show business and three animals –Welsh Corgi Tucker, Mrs. Murphy, a gray tiger cat, and Pewter, a tailless Manx cat – have as much to do with catching culprits as does Harry. They interact with animals at the horse show grounds, especially a pesky, thieving, attention-craving monkey named Miss Nasty. Their conversations bring an extra spark to these mysteries.
F
ierce competition in the show ring brings out the worst in some of the contestants. Did that have anything to do with one of the stable hands having his throat cut? Or could it have been caused by trafficking in illegal immigrants?
A
t any rate, this newest addition to the Mrs. Murphy series is another winner, and a delight to read, chock full of horsemanship and show ring vocabulary. Crozet is in an especially lovely part of Virginia and the Browns share that with us.
