I have just finished a very inspiring book on the life of Harriet Tubman, called the Moses of her people. As an escaped slave, she managed to go back to the South, endangering her own freedom in order to rescue others from the oppression of slavery. Looking at her face on the cover of this extremely interesting book, one can see, by the determination in the set of her mouth and the almost cold look in her eyes, that she would accomplish what she set out to do.

The author several times points out the size of Harriet's hands and the strength they held. But the greatest strength must have been in her heart. Injured in her childhood, she carried a scar on her forehead for the rest of her life. Harriet claimed from then on that she heard the voice of God telling her what to do. And she listened. Suffering from narcolepsy, she would abruptly fall deeply asleep only to wake later and continue where her conversation had left off.

Married twice but bearing no children, Harriet Tubman led a lonely life. She cared for her unfeeling mother and father - who berated her for every little thing, while Harriet was trying to bring some order into their and everyone else's lives. I shan't chronicle the course of her extraordinary life here. Author Beverly Lowry has done that with a combination of fact and speculation that will keep the reader entranced. Harriet Tubman: Imagining a Life is a loving tribute to a most amazing woman.
